Every top law school has a GPA percentile that tells you how your GPA stacks up to the competition.
The most important numbers you need to know when you’re checking out law school admissions data are the 25th percentile, median, and 75th percentile GPA.
Here’s a short summary.
25th Percentile GPA
If your GPA falls into the 25th percentile then this means that 75% of recently admitted students had a higher GPA than you did.
You’ll likely need to have an awesome LSAT score and/or incredible soft factors (e.g., URM, significant work experience, advanced degree, awards) to get admitted in this scenario. These are your “dream” law schools.
If your GPA is at the median then this means that (1) 50% of recently admitted students achieved a higher GPA than you did, and (2) you scored higher than 50% of recently admitted students.
These are the law schools you should focus a majority of your applications on. In other words, these are your “target” schools.
75th Percentile GPA
If your GPA falls into the 75th percentile then this means that you scored higher than 75% of recently admitted students. Well done!
You should apply to at least one of these law schools. These are your “safety” law schools.
