Zojirushi Thermos Review
Each morning I brew my favorite dark roast coffee in an Aeropress, pour the delicious nectar of the gods into my Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug (SM-SA48-BA), and head to the office for what is most often a 12+ hour day. And believe it or not, my coffee stays piping hot all day long. Yours will too as soon as you start using the Zojirushi travel mug.
The 16-ounce version is 2.75 inches wide, 2.75 inches deep, and 8.6 inches long. The Zojirushi weighs in at just 8 ounces. So it’s compact and lightweight. Perfect for everyday use.
The Zojirushi thermos is made from stainless steel and BPA-free plastic. This means the Zojirushi will not rust and you won’t get cancer from the plastic.
Heat (and Cold) Retention
This is where the Zojirushi truly shines. It keeps coffee hot. Really hot! All day long. It also keeps beverages really cold all day long.
Science tells us that the ideal brew temperature for coffee is between 195 and 205 degrees. According to Zojirushi’s specs, coffee kept in the Zojirushi for one hour measures in at 189 degrees. After six hours, it’s 160 degrees. Those specs alone are impressive, but they don’t tell the whole story.
For example, about two weeks ago I was in a hurry to get to the office and forgot my Zojirushi in the cup holder of my car. Tragic, I know. At around 7:00 PM I went back to my car for the drive home. My coffee was still hot, even after sitting in the cold weather all day. I’m convinced that Zojirushi’s specs are, to say the least, “conservative.” The thermal retention is almost too good.
If you’re into iced coffee, tea, vodka, or whatever, you’ll be happy to know that, according to Zojirushi’s specs, your iced beverage will stay a brisk 46 degrees for at least six hours. Again, I find that cold beverages stay cold for much longer than six hours.
Another solid feature of the Zojirushi travel mug is its safety lock, which gives me incredible peace of mind when I’m on the go. Before the Zojirushi I was too paranoid to throw a travel mug filled with piping hot coffee in my briefcase. Now, I simply slide the tab to the left and forget it. The Zojirushi’s safety lock does the rest.
The Zojirushi travel mug’s flip-up top is an ergonomic marvel. Its one-hand usability and smooth 1.5 inch pour spout make drinking on the run a snap.
Unlike other travel mugs, you can fully disassemble the Zojirushi thermos to keep it looking and smelling like new. I typically disassemble the Zojirushi, clean it quickly by hand with soapy water, and let it air dry overnight. I rarely, if ever, see coffee stains on the inside of my Zojirushi due to its slick, non-stick interior.
If you’re particularly lazy or forget to clean your Zojirushi thermos for a few days (or weeks), just use a quality bottle brush and you’ll be good to go. I use the OXO Good Grips Bottle Brush pictured below.
The Zojirushi travel mug is a well-built and durable coffee thermos. I’ve used it on a near-daily basis for more than two years. I’ve dropped it more times than I’d like to admit, and it continues to show little signs of wear. A small scuff here and there, but that’s it. One thing is for sure: it’s a heck of a lot more durable than my iPhone.
Zojirushi is a stand-up company. It offers a five-year warranty on its thermal insulation. I’ve had my Zojirushi coffee thermos for more than two years, as well as a Zojirushi Rice Cooker for over five years. I have absolutely zero complaints with both items. But it’s nice to know that just in case something goes wrong, Zojirushi stands behind its products.
The Zojirushi travel mug is, hands down, the best coffee thermos I have ever owned. It’s style, heat retention, and utilitarian design cannot be beat. Get yours today.
